What is Kim's Corner, Exactly? I am Kim - Casey's wife. Casey runs Capitol Area Bowhunters. I like to write blogs, so I am starting a blog on hunting.
Some of the blogs will come from interviewing Casey about hunting-related topics, some will come from me, as the wife of a somewhat obsessed hunter, some will be recipes, and, honestly, some will whatever I am in the mood to blog about! I'll list some topics I plan to write about at the bottom of this entry.
I met Casey too long ago (okay, 21 years). He's been a hunter ever since I've known him and long before that as well. I also come from an extended family of hunters. My mom's family owned a farm (and I have aunts, uncles, and cousins who still live on the property) and most of her relatives are hunters. My mom never was and my immediate family never hunted, but I have grown up eating venison and being around hunters as my family is super close.
When Casey and I first got serious, I tried to get into hunting. Let's just say that the concept of sitting still for hours without talking is not something I can do. I was the cause of a few lost hunts :) Even so, I can help butcher an animal with the best of them and I'm always working to improve my venison cooking techniques.
Our family keeps us super busy. We have 3 kids. Chris is 16 and attends Hargrave Military Academy in Southern VA with the hopes of attending the Airforce Academy after graduation. Maggie is 13 and is our crazy contortionist. She enjoys freaking people out with how she can bend. She's also quite the writer and my pageant girl. Phoebe is 9 years old. She's a total goofball, but we all adore her. She loves gymnastics, swimming, and right now, the Descendants - just the music videos, though, on repeat! She has Down syndrome, so this is where my passion for disability education comes from and you will probably see that in my blogs related to hunting. We also are now a cat family - Casey and I had dogs for many years, and I never thought I would own cats, but my daughter wanted a cat, so we'd thought we'd give it a try. We have 2 that we adopted and we also foster cats. I also volunteer weekly at a cat shelter to take care of the cats - I could easily become a cat lady. Not much is funnier than an obnoxious cat. As for me, I have a background in Electrical Engineering, then I went into teaching, and finally, I spent about 12 years in my family's business (Majik Enterprises) before leaving to concentrate on my kiddo's and their schooling. Since leaving my job, I've dabbled here and there. I've tried a few direct marketing companies and other random businesses, but now I mostly concentrate on homeschooling Maggie and working as a pageant mom and director for a local natural pageant. We love the program, which teaches the kids poise and confidence and love the people we meet from all over the world. Some specific topics of conversation to look for this year: Shed hunting - all the details of why and how preseason preparations - what should you be doing before the season starts to have success Coyote huntng Clothing - recommendations of clothing types and brands for different seasons Drones - Casey bought a drone to help map the land he leases (some would call it a toy) Hunting with kids - do's and don'ts Hunting with your spouse - do's and don'ts Disability hunting - equipment, regulations, support, etc. Recipes - trying it all out for you
